Black Leaders of Veterinary Medicine
Our Story
Black Leaders of Veterinary Medicine (BLVM) was founded with a simple yet powerful mission: to pay forward the support that made our own journeys possible. After graduating from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, we were inspired to create a scholarship for Black students pursuing a career within veterinary medicine. What started as an idea, shared among friends, quickly grew into a nonprofit dedicated to a larger purpose.
BLVM plans to not only provide financial support for future Black veterinarians but also engage with communities to build a more inclusive and representative profession. Our work is driven by the belief that every student deserves the chance to thrive—one student, one story, and one community at a time.

Scholarship
The BLVM Mosaic Veterinary Scholarship economically supports the next generation of Black Veterinary Leaders. The scholarship encourages intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and emotional growth. Thus, empowering diverse cultures, ideas, and perspectives—helping build a profession that reflects and serves all communities.
Leadership
Intentional 1:1 mentorship and meaningful network collaboration, advocates for and empowers the next generation of veterinary leaders. Our approach goes beyond financial support—we focus on cultivating confidence, skills, and opportunities that enable students to step into leadership roles within their schools, communities, and the profession at large.
Community engagement strengthens our communities while paving the way for a more diverse and equitable profession. We plan to reach beyond the vet school and into neighborhoods, schools, and organizations. We aim to drive lasting change that makes veterinary medicine more accessible, equitable, and inspiring for future generations.

Meet the Leadership Team
Founded by proud alumnae of the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, our organization is driven by a shared passion for advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion within the veterinary profession. With more than 18 years of combined experience spanning veterinary medicine, business, and community engagement, we unite our expertise to create meaningful change. Through scholarships, economic empowerment, and community initiatives, we are committed to building a more inclusive future in veterinary medicine—one where every voice and every dream has the opportunity to thrive.
Dr. Torri Allen
Co-Founder, Black Leaders of Veterinary Medicine
Dr. Torri Allen graduated from the University of Georgia with a B.S. in Biological Sciences before pursuing her first dream—playing professional soccer for the Chicago Red Stars. During her time in Chicago, she began volunteering at a local animal shelter, where she rediscovered a lifelong passion for animal care. Realizing this calling outweighed her desire to remain a professional athlete, she made the pivotal decision to return to the University of Georgia and pursue veterinary medicine.
In 2019, Dr. Allen earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from UGA and was selected as a recipient of the U.S. Army’s Health Professions Scholarship Program. Presently, she serves as the Branch Chief of the Yokosuka Veterinary Treatment Facility in Yokosuka, Japan, where she lives with her husband, Gary, son Gary III, and their German Shepherd, Hunter.
Beyond veterinary medicine, Dr. Allen enjoys quilting, staying active through exercise, hiking, camping, and exploring new foods.
Dr. Aisha H. Ellis
Co-Founder, Black Leaders of Veterinary Medicine
Dr. Aisha H. Ellis is a dedicated veterinarian and creative professional whose love for animals began in childhood and grew into a lifelong commitment to advancing animal health, welfare, and education. She earned her undergraduate degree from Tuskegee University and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Georgia. Dr. Ellis has worked in government, Animal Welfare, General Practice, and currently practices Emergency Medicine.
Passionate about teaching, mentorship, and community engagement, Dr. Ellis finds fulfillment in supporting students, sharing knowledge, and helping future veterinary leaders discover their path. Her work—both inside and outside the clinic—reflects her belief in education, connection, and investing in others.
Outside of veterinary medicine, she enjoys exploring new foods, traveling, spending time with family/friends, and watching movies. She is also a proud pet parent to her two dogs, Iverson Bell and Nigel Frijolito con Crema.
Dr. Camara Carter
Co-Founder, Black Leaders of Veterinary Medicine
Dr. Camara Carter was born and raised in Georgia. She received her undergraduate degree from Harvard University in Environmental Science and Public Health. She later returned home to pursue her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia, followed by a small animal rotating internship at Blue Pearl Veterinary Services—one of the busiest veterinary hospitals in the country.
She now practices as an Emergency Veterinarian, where her experience supporting families and their pets during the end-of-life process led her to create her own business, PeacefulPaw Transitions, which offers professional in-home euthanasia services that prioritize comfort, compassion, and peace.
Beyond veterinary medicine, Dr. Carter enjoys traveling, hiking, bowling, mountain biking, and spending time with her family. She is also the proud human of Gaia, her beautiful white Bengal cat.
